Symposium on Childhood Cancer 19th Dakar Medical, Pharmaceutical, Dental, and Veterinary Conference: April 26–29, 2023

These events took place at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) in Dakar.

The Symposium on Childhood Cancer was held on April 26 (9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.). The symposium was moderated by Prof. S. Diop and Prof. M. Raphaël.

In the presence of Dr. Amy Fall-Ndao, Medical Director forSanofi's Global Health Unit.

The presentations were excellent on thefollowing topics:

  • Childhood cancers, the paradox of carcinogenesis, Prof. M. Gadji;
  • Contribution of immunolabeling, immunophenotyping, Prof. A. Sall;
  • Immunohistochemistry, Prof. C.Dial;
  • Immunotherapy in childhood cancers, Dr. M. NdellaDiouf;
  • Presentation of the Reference Center for the Diagnosis of Childhood Cancers (CRDCE), Prof. M. Raphaël.

Attached is the CRDCE presentation, which shows the implementation of the CRDCE, which began in July 2020, demonstrating the progress made in developing structures that enable better diagnosis of these tumors.

The outlook is to maintain the activities put in place by securing long-term funding, installing an immunohistochemistry machine in response to the increase in activity for this technique, which is still manual,developinga new tele-pathology site, probably located at UCAD or using a platform operating in other structures, the organization of training such as a new immunohistochemistry or cytometry workshop, cytogenetics, the extension to other Senegalese sites or other African countries of the use of this center to improve diagnostics, and finally, discussion around the establishment of university training (DU) courses related to this training.

Dakar Medical Days, Cheikh Anta Diop University, Dakar

As part of the 19th Dakar Medical, Pharmaceutical, Dental, and Veterinary Conference, which will be held from April 26 to 29, 2023, at Cheikh Anta Diop University, a symposium on childhood cancers will be held on Friday, April 28. The following topics will be presented: the Reference Center for Child Diagnosis (CRDCE), the immunophenotypic aspects of leukemia and solid tumors, carcinogenesis data, and immunotherapy in childhood cancers.

These presentations address the biological and anatomo-pathological aspects of CRDCE in conjunction with the Pediatric Oncology Unit in Dakar and correspond to the implementation of the CRDCE project created with the support of the Sanofi Espoir Foundation through the My Child Matters program and with the current support of the Sanofi Foundation S.

This entire project is the result of the efforts of hematologists, cytogeneticists, pathologists, and pediatric oncologists in Dakar, with support from the AMCC as part of the Pathology and Diagnostic Support program.

The dynamism of the Reference Center for the Diagnosis of Childhood Cancers (CRDCE)

The CRDCE in Dakar, Senegal, was present at two important virtual conferences: the AORTIC/OAREC (African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer) conference from November 5 to 10, 2021, and the London Global Cancer Week (LGCW) conference, which is being held from November 14 to 19, 2021.

The CRDCE's activities were presented, including the implementation of improvements for reliable and timely diagnosis and the installation of complementary techniques for characterizing tumor cells using immunohistochemistry or flow cytometry.

Classical and molecular cytogenetic techniques, as well as molecular biology, will soon be available to characterize childhood cancers.

All the techniques required for accurate and reliable diagnosis will therefore be put in place in Dakar, reflecting the dynamism of the entire local team with the support of the Sanofi Espoir Foundation as part of the "My Child Matters" program.
